Gadget Twins is a Sega Genesis/Megadrive game that has some basic similarities to other cute-em-ups, especially Fantasy Zone (specifically the shops and weapon upgrade system), but with the fairly unique twist that for the majority of the game, the player only has melee attacks. Eventually you gain access to some projectile attacks, but they're slow and not necessarily the best options in every fight (but generally they're still the best). It's visually pretty impressive, with some colorful, cartoony graphics. The soundtrack is mostly inoffensive, with a couple catchy tunes and a couple fairly annoying ones. The bosses are pretty creative and the overall enemy variety is varied, with many level-specific designs. It can be pretty difficult, because even though you have a health bar, you don't have any i-frames, so a boss will take you out quickly if you're too slow to get out of their way, and since it's melee focused that isn't as easy as it could be. The Sega version is the only one released officially, though a SNES and Amiga version were apparently nearly finished according to the developers (maybe we'll see them one day). It's a shame the final level is by far the least inspired, with a silly toy theme and music that is basically just a heavy remix of "3 Blind Mice." It's hardly the best game ever made, but it is a generally fun time with some really unique ideas and I think it's worth checking out for any shmup fan, especially ones that are looking for novel gameplay.
